Just re-re-re-read Lords and Ladies again. Such a good book. The edition I’m reading has some extra stuff as well: a quiz, short descriptions of the main characters, and a summary of the other books.
I’ve often thought that Pratchett was thinking about Batcave/post-punk style when he described the elves as having dirty, spiky hair and wearing any old bits and bobs of fur and leather and shiny things that caught their eyes, because they were always certain that whatever they wore, they’d look fantastic. And of course the young witches seem very much like contemporary goths…

So, I just re-re-read Monstrous Regiment, and it’s sooo Good. Some People say it’s not as funny as Sir Pterry’s other Books, but to Me it’s plenty funny as well as just really Good. I’m sorry about the capitalization in this post, but I’m on my phone and it just keeps capitalizing random Words. I wanna see more of Borogravia, it’s an interesting Place. It would be cool to see the Discworld equivalent of Scandinavia/Viking-land explored with greater detail. Swedish mercenaries were, in the olden Days, very highly respected and would often be what won a war. This was because conditions up here were so dismal, we could loot a city that had already been looted; something other Soldiers considered impossible. We thought it was better than Home, at least!
I love that one actually, although it may also be the only one I love that I don’t own. Weird. I’m iffy on the Vietnam flashback stuff—it was too weird to be funny to me, it felt like it was trying too hard—but the stuff about gender, abuse, the workhouse for “bad” girls, the Joan of Arc thing, the Duchess, all of that really got me in the sore places in my heart. I’m never sure PTerry really has it right where gender’s concerned, he’s often still pretty invested in “pink=girl, blue=boy” underneath the attempts to question gender, but he’s at least curious and he means well, and sometimes his stuff is really perceptive.

Sounds interesting, care to share a tidbit or two?Regrettably, I sort of flailed and fumbled my way through the presentation, as one does, and lost my tight focus pretty quickly so I could show them…
Reblogging w/ commentary because I don’t know how to tumblr:
Folk Devils sounds like a 16 Horsepower cover band, perhaps an all-female one.
16 Horsepower is a pretty cool band, sort of a mix of goth and country. It has the same darkness in it as Nick Cave’s music.

(Their best song, American Wheeze)
Thanks for the rec! Rossmcbitchface recently introduced me to Gun Club’s early stuff as well, and I was intrigued by the slight country undertones to that.

Regrettably, I sort of flailed and fumbled my way through the presentation, as one does, and lost my tight focus pretty quickly so I could show them different databases and different kinds of communities to research. *sigh* Oh well. But yeah if you’ve got a database of sociological journals, for instance, there’s actually some stuff about goth and punk out there that might be interesting to read. I stumbled across an article on the erasure of black women in punk, for instance (regrettably, not full text, but I can track it down) and one about “folk devils” and the demonization of goth in the wake of the Columbine massacre here in the US.
Also, “Folk Devils” would be a great name for a band.

I didn’t cry, it just kind of moved me. Poor polar bear. However, Vince’s friendship with Gary Numan and Bob Fossil and the explorer bloke’s passionate duet were wonderful. How do you like the show so far?
I really like it—when I first watched season 1 a month ago I thought it was brilliant but wasn’t quite into it yet, but I think I’ve come around. I had a day off today and it’s been chilly and gray out, so I’ve been watching the show all day and it’s been perfect.

Which bands have you got on the playlist? I’m very curious :)
Oh my god, I should actually go through and list them, because I’m sort of curious to see them all laid out together. This will get really long, so I’ll put it behind a cut.

I’ll cut my hair. I’ll do it. And I’ll make this hairstyle. I’ll do.
Now i want my hair like this
Blixa has taught me that there’s no shame in a fluffy mohawk.
Auntie, there never was. Haven’t you ever heard of deathhawks? It’s classic gothic grooming.
I do have a deathhawk, but sometimes I get a post-punk inferiority complex. It’s tragic, really.
Post-punk inferiority complex is an amazingly fitting description of how I feel most of the time. Everyone else is more beautiful, smarter, cooler, funnier and knows more music than me. His hair looks so fluffy, wanna run my hands through it and pet him on the head.
This is tragic, because you are fabulous. The post-punk inferiority complex, I mean, not petting Blixa. We all want to pet Blixa. It would only turn tragic once he got annoyed and bit off someone’s hand.

Otto Dix about 1919/20 at a masked ball
He’s not even masked tho
damn German Expressionists always had to be different
AGAIN I think this is some goth musician I should probably have heard of. I’m terrible at this stuff!
But really this is a perfectly cromulent assumption given that one of our people’s favorite bands is named Bauhaus

Haven’t listened to Specimen in forever!
This is 1000x more flamboyant than any Depeche Mode photoshoot
Seeing this image at age 13 may be one of the reasons I am like I am today.
Qurl I know damn well that seeing Victor/Victoria at age 5 and Annie Lennox at age 6 are why I’m how I am today
