cumaeansibyl replied to your post: I hope you all like Siouxsie (and, to a lesser…

actually, now that you mention it, I’ve been meaning to ask/confess. what are some good Siouxsie and the Banshees songs for beginners? I don’t know their music at all and I would like some representative examples. please don’t hate me

WHY WOULD I HATE YOU FOR ASKING THIS BEAUTIFUL QUESTION.  I feel like the audio posts in my SatB tag are a fun place to listen, although I also put in B-sides and live stuff (although that’s pretty good stuff too, IMO).  You should also be able to listen to the entire Hyaena album at that tag.  Of course, the trouble is that there’s a lot of images in both tags too, so digging for audio might be a pain.

But anyway the albums are all so different that it’s really hard to say which ones are the best.  Nocturne is a great place to start in a way because the Banshees were amazing live, and the concert incorporates stuff from everything up through A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, which is, ah, their 5th album?  There are songs on there that I never even heard the original studio recording of for almost 20 years, but loved from that recording.  Juju is considered an amazing album, and their first album, The Scream, is also really stand-out.

I know you don’t expect any artist to be without issues, but I’ll point out that the Banshees have problematic lyrics about fat people, sex workers, and Middle Easterners.  “Hong Kong Garden” is meant ironically, and as a tribute to a local Chinese family whose restaurant was always being invaded by skinheads, but I’m not super comfortable with that one either.  Never let it be said that I can’t admit their flaws tho.

I’M SORRY, I HOPE YOU DON’T WISH YOU HADN’T ASKED
